When you greet someone, no matter they are close friends or complete strangers, you can always break down the barrier by giving them a warm, friendly smile. Meanwhile, if you show a set of clean teeth with healthy gums, your smile will be even more charming. On the contrary, if your teeth are unclean and your gums are red and swollen, and perhaps with bad breath, that will certainly spoil your personal image. Among the people you meet today, can you tell whose gums are healthy and whose gums are unhealthy? How about yourself? Act now and check your gums, keep them healthy to achieve a brighter smile.

Now check your gums and see if they are pink, or red and swollen.

Pink type
(Healthy gums)
gums are pale pink and firm
gums between teeth are cone shaped
gum margins are firmly attached to the teeth

Red and swollen type (Unhealthy gums)
gums are red and swollen
gums between teeth are swollen, and there may be the formation of triangular space in-between teeth due to gum recession
gums bleed easily on brushing or flossing

Red and swollen gums and bleeding easily are all early symptoms of gum disease. Gum disease is a chronic disease of the tooth supporting tissues. It is caused by the accumulation of dental plaque around the teeth at the gumline, causing gum inflammation. Without proper oral care, the condition may deteriorate to a more serious stage that tooth supporting tissues will recede. The affected tooth will become loose and eventually fall out as a result of inadequate supporting tissue.

However, should the patient remove dental plaque from their teeth every day with proper toothbrushing and flossing techniques during the initial stage of gum disease, their gum health will be restored. In addition, we should go and see a dentist every year for dental check-up and the teeth should be professionally cleaned in order to maintain the teeth and gums healthy. Furthermore, since the chance of smokers developing gum disease is at least five times greater than that of non-smokers, please don¡¦t smoke.

Brushing your teeth in the morning and before bed at night and using dental floss daily to clean the adjacent tooth surfaces are good teeth cleaning habits. By keeping these habits, you will have healthy teeth and gums, fresh breath, brighter smiles with self confidence and admiration gaze from others.
