Love Teeth Campaign
3.20 World Oral Health Day cum Love Teeth Campaign and Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Estates Activity Day Opening Ceremony
In response to the advocacy of the World Dental Federation (FDI), the Department of Health (DH) launches a variety of activities to celebrate the “World Oral Health Day” which is on 20 March every year since 2013.
The theme of the World Oral Health Day this year is "Live Mouth Smart”. It aims to promote the public to live a smart life through taking good care of their health. These include developing proper oral self-care and eating habits, seeking regular dental check-up as well as avoiding harmful behaviors such as smoking. In this way, optimal oral health can be attained which in turn can bring about happiness throughout every stage of our lives.
As early as in January this year, the Oral Health Education Unit (OHEU) of DH has launched a series of activities to the public through different channels to promote this theme, including radio and television broadcast, newspaper advertorials, exhibition panels in public transport, interactive activities held in the Love Teeth HK Facebook page and magnetic play zone in a heavy foot-traffic Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station, Kowloon Tong. Apart from these, there were drawing and colouring activities held at kindergartens, primary schools, and special needs schools to arouse the awareness and concern of oral health among the students.
On top of that, a community event “World Oral Health Day cum Love Teeth Campaign and Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Estates Activity Day” was held on 12 March 2017 at the atrium of the Domain, Yau Tong. The Activity Day was held in collaboration with the local stakeholders, which included the Hong Kong Housing Authority, Hong Kong Dental Association, Hong Kong Dental Council, Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Department of Health Dental Therapists Association, together with local dental hygienists and dental surgery assistants, as a pre-celebration for the World Oral Health Day, as well as to deliver the message “Good Oral Health can be achieved when good life style is established from childhood”.
In addition, since 2016, OHEU has worked with the Hong Kong Dental Association (HKDA) and the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) by incorporating oral health elements into the existing “Healthy Ageing in Public Rental Housing Estates” programme regularly run by the HA. Over the past 12 months, a total of about 500 elderly tenants from various public housing estates had attended the three oral health talks cum workshops held under the programme.
Besides, the “Senior Patron Angel” Volunteering Programme, an extension of the “Senior Patron Angel” training programme, , has also been in place to train senior citizens the proper oral health knowledge and self-care skills to become “Senior Patron Angels”. These senior volunteers possess adequate oral self-care abilities sufficient to coach their senior peers and they also take part in promoting oral health among citizens in the community.
OHEU hopes everybody can support the notion of the World Oral Health Day, and adopt a healthy lifestyle which leads to a happy and smart life.
